Autumn and winter walks in the UK mean one thing: a soaked, muddy dog climbing straight into the car. A few simple habits and the right kit keep your seats and boot clean without a battle at the end of every walk.
1. Decide where your dog travels, then protect that spot
Most mess comes from a dog moving around the car. Pick one place, the back seat or the boot, and fit a cover there so your dog learns it is their space. A waterproof back seat cover hangs hammock-style between the front and rear headrests, so mud and hair stay on the cover rather than the seat or the footwell.
2. Use a boot liner with a bumper flap
If your dog rides in the boot, a quilted waterproof car boot liner with side flaps and a bumper flap covers the floor, the sides and the paintwork your dog scrambles over on the way in. Ours straps to the rear headrests and wipes clean with a damp cloth.
3. Small dog? Lift them up and keep them put
Small dogs often end up on laps or the centre console. A foldable car booster seat gives dogs up to about 7 kg a raised spot by the window with a short built-in lead that clips to a harness, so wet paws stay in one place.
4. Keep an old towel and a brush in the car
A quick rub down before your dog gets in removes most of the surface water and loose mud. A self-cleaning slicker brush lifts loose fur before it ends up on the upholstery, and it empties with one press.
5. Let the mud dry, then brush or vacuum
Wet mud smears. If some gets on the seats anyway, let it dry fully, then brush it off and vacuum. Most dried mud comes away cleanly from fabric and from a cover.
6. Wipe covers down the same day
Waterproof covers are quick to clean while the mud is fresh. Wipe them with a damp cloth or shake them out, then leave them to air. A rinse with the hose every few weeks keeps them smelling fresh.
